The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, built in the 13th century on the basis of a Romanesque basilica, is the oldest building not only within the castle area but in the whole city. This church is home to the real jewels of Gothic art in Slovakia: A copper baptismal font, the altar in the Chapel of St. Barbara made in workroom of Master Paul from Levoča, and a unique sculpture of Jesus on the Mount of Olives situated in the niche on the South facade of the church.
